I Almost Forgot

Last night I put Jackson down at 9:30 pm and decided to roll the dice and not get up at midnight to feed him and see how long he would sleep.

He got up at 6 a.m....8 and a half hours later. My body didn't know what to do this morning! Everyone keep those fingers crossed for a repeat performance this evening :)

Superstar!

Wednesday was the third annual Football 101, a clinic that CU football puts on for people, specifically women (there are always a few dudes that come for some reason). So myself, Grandma Jane, Sally O'Malley and my friend Beth attended with other various buddies from CU Athletics.

The clinic was a blast. I won't go into too much detail but it was super fun. The highlight for me was not related to the actual clinic. The boys of Buffvision have started producing some Vote Colorado Football Spots (to see them for yourself visit www.youtube.com/buffvision) which I think are witty and clever. The latest one will feature head coach Dan Hawkins with a cameo by, you guessed it, Jackson Lew! I will post it here when it is completed.

Colds Suck

There's really no other way to put it. Colds in a 12-week old suck. We are on day whatever of this cold, and mamacita is over it. This morning he had a lovely fever again and was eating like he couldn't care less if he ever did again, so it was back to the doctor's office as he was throwing some signs of ear infection out there. Ps, I had to stick that thermometer in a place I never wanted to stick it as I was done trying to get it in the right spot in his armpit for an accurate reading.

So we went to the doc. And the nurse practitioner we had to see can't see Jackson's eardrum because there was so much wax in his ears (GROSS, incidentally). So she whips out a little tool to get it out and instead of her getting the wax out and us getting on with our lives, he screams unlike anything I have ever experienced in his short little life. He was screaming so hard and so long that not only did he sweat through his onesie, he sweated through my tee shirt. F...is an understatement. So then because we can't get all the wax out, the on call pediatrician has to come and get it out, so naturally Jackson is asleep on my shoulder and we have to go through this again. I think all my hair turned gray today. The best part is that he doesn't have an ear infection and when we got home, he smiled and cooed at me and then fell asleep. How short their memories are. Then he woke up and ate his dinner like the old Jackson. Huh...who knows what the hell goes on.

What Goes On at Night?

This morning I had an experience that I'm sure almost all new parents have and either freak out or laugh about.

When I put Jackson into his crib each night for his big block of sleep (between 12 and 6 am) I have him neatly swaddled and his head is facing north. For 11 weeks and five days, when I walked back into his room in the morning, or any other nap time, that was essentially how I found him each time. Once or twice he has been totally unswaddled but always he is in the north end of the crib with his head in that direction. That changed this morning.

He was up at 5:15 am (ugh) and I walked in there and found him facing the opposite direction in the opposite end of the crib. The swaddle blanket was in a ball tucked into the corner of the crib. He was laying there in his onesie, probably chilly, waiting for us to come get him. How I think it went down: his mattress is at a slight incline right now to help with his schnoz congestion during illness. I surmise that he wiggled his way down to the south end of the crib and then in the process of pulling a Houdini out of his swaddle, somehow rotated 180 degrees. I got him out and then went and got dad to show him what I found and we were both just sort of speechless.

Needless to say, tonight is night three of the jammies experiment.

Happy Birthday to Me

Well this is quite an interesting birthday for me, my first as a mom. I'm earning my mom stripes today as Jackson is sick, again. He's got an upper respitory infection. He doesn't like to eat much as he has quite a sore throat so feedings that took 15 minutes on Monday take an hour now. I feel bad that the pumpkin is sick, but he is as smiley and cooey and darling as ever. Its almost like he appreciates how hard we're trying to make him comfortable so he does the only happy things he knows how to do...smile, coo, shout at his bouncy seat and dance around everywhere else.

Last night I had a lovely girls night out with a group of great friends and we saw Mamma Mia. It was fabulous. But Pierce Brosnan should never sing again. Amanda Seyfried on the other hand, whom I only knew as Karen the dumb one from Mean Girls, was surprisingly outstanding. If you like ABBA music, go see it. Jackson was home with his dad and slept great finally...ah the wonders of tylenol and a humidifier. Tonight we will perhaps venture out to meet Jason after his softball game.

All Good

So Jackson, and more importantly mom and dad, survived the first overnight without each other. J-man did very well with Grammie and Papa and the only curveball he threw them was a 4 am wakeup call. See, Jason and I have the sound turned down on our monitors and just have the lights on, so unless he's really really unhappy, we don't really know about it in the middle of the night. They had the sound up, so when he did his typical 4 am chatty times, they got up and hooked him up with some food. I don't know what he expected the next night, but if he was mad I didn't hear him and he got up at his usual 6 am. We haven't tried another night without the swaddle, but I have a feeling that even as I type this he has worked his way out of his swaddle, which is fine. The doc said that when he was ready to be out of the swaddle, he would get out on his own. So I think maybe the more he does that, the more we'll try to do jammies.

Today I got a day off and went to Blackhawk with the grandmas. No one won. F. Tomorrow...a premature birthday celebration. I will go see Mamma Mia with a number of my friends on a girls night out. I love ABBA (um, who doesn't?) and it looks pretty great so I'm looking forward to that. It is also the inaugural University of Colorado Athletics Field Day, which should be a hoot. I'm going to put in an appearance there despite the fact that I am still on mom leave. I have less than two weeks left with my boy and I'm trying to soak it up for the most part, but this was an opportunity I could not pass up. If it weren't so freaking hot in the 303 I would bring Jackson, but it will be too hot for him. However I think he will be making an appearance at Football 101.

End of the Swaddle?

So we had a minor breakthrough the other night with the little man. We had gone to Jason's softball game that night late and we got home at like 10:30. He was out, so I carefully put him in his swaddler and he was in his crib to for the tail end of his late night nap at maybe 10:45ish or so. When I went in there to feed him at midnight, not only had he completely houdinied out of his swaddle, he was sleeping sound as a pound. Usually when he gets out of that bad boy he is wide awake, so this was something new.

I decided to put him in his cute new romper outfit and put him back down after his midnight feeding to see if he would sleep through until 6 like he usually does. I was not disappointed...he slept his usual time and was awake and happy for his dad at 6 am the next morning. As yet this has not worked during the day but it is working at night so that's good.

In other news, Grammie and Papa are here and are going to watch Jackson so we can attend the wedding of our friends Kristen and Ed in Breckenridge. It will be our first night away from him, and I don't want to talk about that :)

Meanwhile...my friends have been popping out babies like it's their job! My college friends Kim and Ryan welcomed their son Quinn Geiler Davis on July 13, followed immediately by Brylin Hope Gomer, the daughter of Britt and Brad on July 14. Congrats you guys!!!

Give It Up for Pedialyte

Well I'm back. Yesterday was a no blog day...it was a no computer day in fact as I was working overtime to get the little pumpkin back on track. Soon after the F blog below, he barfed up his midnight snack and I ran to King Soopers at 12:10 a.m. for Pedialyte, which worked like a charm to get him through till morning. He barfed up his first breakfast on the porch but after that he kept all his food down for the rest of the day which was such a relief. The Hershey squirts (although they were more white chocolate than milk chocolate in color) have also subsided...we hope for good.

So now it's the weekend and unfortunately Jason is sick so mommy is on overtime for a second straight day. We went to the coffee shop in our little shopping plaza to get out of the house and let daddy sleep so he can get better. Once he woke up from his little nap, Jackson was all smiles...that's what the photo here depicts...he is back to his darling self. I get some time off tomorrow as Grandma and I are going to see the U.S play Brazil in women's soccer at DSG Park in Denver. That will be fun. Happy Saturday!

F.

The inevitable has occurred, however it's much earlier than I had anticipated. It seems that Jackson has a stomach virus. He has some diarrhea cha-cha-cha that isn't of the normal variety, so of course Dr. Mom looked up the color and consistency on the poo charts in our library of baby books and voila, stomach virus is my expert diagnosis.

I'm not taking this lightly. I'm attempting to portray a cavalier attitude as I'm obviously not thrilled that my 10 week old son has a case of the runny poos apparently due to some dirty virus. It could be part of why he was hating tummy time so much the last two days. So far he hasn't gone vomitron (fingers crossed) and he hasn't been what I would define as fussy. I suppose he has been fussy for him (which means fussy at all) so I guess maybe he has been fussy?

Now we play the balancing game of when to call the doctor. The doctors website says it is not necessary to call the doctor unless XY and Z happen. Well that's all fine and good, but he's 10 freaking weeks old...70 days (which by the way...wow...I can still remember day one!). Football season is longer than that. He weighs like 13 pounds and can't even hold his head up yet all the time, so I'm not sure I'm comfortable with waiting for XY and Z to all go down. I think if I see any signs of X Y or Z in the morning then I'm picking up the phone.

Tummy Time

Jackson hates tummy time. He hasn't ever really liked it. But now he hates it. Ever since those shots. When Grandma babysat on Monday, she said he whined the entire time he was on his tummy. He didn't cry, he just whined. When Jason put him on his tummy tonight, he lasted all of four minutes before a total meltdown.

I don't have any other comments, I'm just sharing it.

Back to Normal

So three days later, Jackson has returned to his super cute and super sweet self...we are glad the post-shot stress has subsided as it was like having someone else's kid in our house. He is back to his smiling and cute self again. I am not looking forward to round two of shots and hoping they will go better in September.

If you are looking for some new Jackson photos, check out the photo album on the top right of this page...there are some new ones from this past weekend. We actually had a few moments when he wasn't screaming. :)

Shots....Ahhhhhhh!

Shots. I've been dreading it for awhile. Today was Jackson's two month old checkup and immunization activities. The good stuff: He's up to 12 lbs, 13 oz, which is a gain of three pounds. He has jumped from the 50th to the 75th percentile in weight. He is now just shy of 24 inches long, and I can't remember how big his melon is. But they are all growing.

Then we did some development stuff. Jason and I have been diligent in tummy time, but when it came time for him to perform, he just laid there and smiled and laughed at me instead of showing off his amazing head and neck control. I swear our pediatrician probably thinks we just have him laying around all day eating bon bons. Then she looked at one of his eyes for what seemed like an eternity and then told me it was nothing to worry about. Right.

Next up...shots. Today Jackson would have four shots plus an oral rotovirus vaccine that would lead to diarrhea cha cha cha. Jackson is a tough kiddo. But even the tough little man was not going to roll well with FOUR shots. He cried from shot one until about 15 seconds after the end of shot four, then promptly fell asleep on my shoulder. His crying reached a volume and pitch unheard from him previously, including at one point throwing his head back and his mouth wide open but no sound coming out because he was crying so hard. That was super fun...but the REAL fun didn't start until we got home.

Needless to really say, he has not been himself today, which is of course normal and "nothing to worry about." My son that never cries is suddenly crying, has a fever, doesn't feel like eating...but that is, say it with me, nothing to worry about. He's not sleeping great either. I'm not worried about long term issues, just you know...he's just not himself, and that bothers me. He's such a good little guy, such a trooper, and I hate that this threw him so much.

Jason asked what his next shots would be...I hated telling him we would do the same batch in two months. I can see why people wonder if it's worth it, but honestly, and I'm talking to YOU Boulder people (13th worst immunization rates in the entire COUNTRY in spite of being the "most educated city in the U.S." apparently they aren't paying attention in common sense class) it's better than them being sick with debilitating and possibly fatal illnesses. I mean honestly WHAT are you people thinking. Boulder has three times more whooping cough cases than any other county in Colorado because the deluded people here think that immunizations are a lifestyle choice...you know like choosing whole milk at Starbucks or getting tattoos. Give me a break. It's like epidurals...obviously there is a need for them, so someone invented them to solve a serious problem. It really bugs me that people don't get their kids vaccinated and then their kid is going to be around my kid because they get some b.s. waiver for school. I say boo to them. Get your kid their shots.
